Dog Leash Holder DIY

Red dog leash with paw prints on a white background

Like humans, dogs have lots of things. Leashes, collars, dog toys, and treats. They get stored on shelves, the top of the fridge, in any available drawer, and before you know it they lost and you can’t find them when you need them.

These dog leash holder DIYs are a great way to create a storage area just for your dog to keep all of his important stuff in one place.

Dog Leash Holder Ideas

A dog leash holder doesn’t have to be fancy, but it does need to be functional. Things like old coat racks or a wall mounted shelf can easily be given a new roll as a leash holder just by jazzing them up a little with some new paint and hooks.

Dog Leash Holder with Shelf

Materials:

  • 2 pieces of board that are the same size ( I used 1 inch x 6 inch lumber and cut them to 18 inches long. You can make them shorter or longer depending on your need.)
  • Screws
  • 2 -2 inch L-brackets (Corner Braces) or small decorative shelf brackets
  • Wood Glue
  • 5 Decorative hooks like these from Amazon -(You can add more or less)
  • Sand paper
  • Measuring tape
  • Screw Driver or Electric Drill
  • Pencil

Instructions:

  1. Cut your lumber to the desired length.
  2. Sand the boards smooth to avoid splinters.
  3. Take one piece of the board and put a thin layer of wood glue across the top edge (on the long side).
  4. Place the second board across the top of the first board where you just added the glue to create the shelf.
  5. Add 3 screws ( one on each end and one in the middle) through the top board into the bottom board being careful not to split your boards.
  6. With your shelf laying flat, screw in your 2 L brackets underneath what will be your top shelf on each end of the boards.
  7. To place your hooks, measure the space between the L brackets and divide it by 6 ( 5 hooks will create 4 space in between each hook with a space on each end) .
  8. Mark your board based on your measurements and attach the hooks using screws.
  9. Decorate your leash holder and hang it on your wall.

  • A piece of board cut 8 inches tall by 18 inches wide
  • A quart size glass jar
  • Small and Large J Hooks
  • 1 adjustable hose clamp large enough to fit around your jar
  • a rotary tool with a cut off wheel
  • sandpaper

  • electric drill with screwdriver bit and small drill bit
  • screws
  • permanent marker

Instructions:

  1. Lightly sand your board to remove splinters.
  2. Place the hose clamp around your jar and adjust the clamp so that your jar will still slide out. Holding your jar and clamp, place them on the left side of your board. Center the jar vertically but close to the left side horizontally and mark with the pencil where you will be attaching the hose clamp.
  3. With your permanent marker, mark the back of the hose clamp opposite if the clasp. Remove the hose clamp from the jar and drill a small hole for your screw in the center of the hose clamp band where you made the mark.
  4. Screw the hose clamp to the board where you marked with the pencil.
  5. On the right side of your board, attach the small J hooks in a row across the top of the board and attach the large J hooks on the right side across the bottom of the board.
  6. Attach the leash holder to the wall, then place the jar in the hose clamp and tighten the clamp.
  7. Fill the jar with treats, hang your keys on the top hooks and leashes on the bottom.

This video from Made By Marzipan show how to easily attach a glass jar to wood using hose clamps.

DIY Dog Leash Holder with Bag Storage

Blueprint for DIY Dog Leash Holder with Bag Storage

I love this DIY Leash Holder that I found on Everyday Dishes! It has a container that holds leftover grocery bags to use to clean up puppy messes.

Materials:

  • 12″ x 12″ piece of wood
  • wood stain
  • 2 sawtooth hangers
  • hammer
  • large wipes container
  • scissors
  • fabric
  • Mod Podge
  • foam brush
  • hot glue
  • 2 coat and hat hooks
  • adhesive letters
  • wooden nameplate
  • 6 – #4 x ½” flat screws
  • drill

Instructions:

  1. Stain wood and then allow it to dry. Once dry, attach sawtooth hangers to the back of the board.
  2. Open the wipes container and carefully cut off the inside flaps and discard them.
  3. Wrap fabric around the container to determine the correct size. Then cut to fit and adhere to the container using Mod Podge and a foam brush. Let dry completely.
  4. Turn wipes container upside down so that the open end is pointing down. Then add hot glue to the back of the wipes container, adhering it to the front of the wooden board. Once it is firmly in place, drill a small hole inside the container at the opening and into the wood. Screw into place.
  5. Determine placement of hooks and drill holes then screw coat hooks onto the wood.
  6. Using adhesive letters, spell your dog’s name on any wooden shape—we used a bone—and screw into place above the coat hooks.
  7. Fill the container with plastic grocery bags, grab a leash and hang by the door.

DIY Key and Dog Leash Holder

Its convenient to have your keys near your dog’s leash so you don’t forget them on your way out the door for a walk. You can easily convert any of the above DIY projects to include a place for keys. Simply change out a couple of the larger J hooks for smaller ones.
