9 Dog Breeds That Have Green Eyes

When dogs have different colored eyes than what we think of as normal, they are very attractive and attention getting. However, not all dog breeds offer a variety of eye colors. Here are 9 dog breeds that have green eyes.

American Pit Bull

Pit bulls are often referred to as a single dog breed. However, they can be further classified into five subtypes. These different types of pit bulls vary in physical characteristics, but some of the traits can be common. For instance, the American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier have large heads and lean, muscular bodies.

On the other hand, eyes are where this breed differs, even in its subclasses. Pit bulls can have green as well as blue, hazel, or brown eyes. Similarly, the color of their short, shiny coats can vary from white to black and from tan to brown.

Australian Sheepdog

This medium-sized breed is smart, work-oriented, and energetic. These loyal dogs make a great addition to active families. Australian Sheepdogs are also known as the “Aussies”.

The merle gene causes mottled patches on the breed’s coat and makes the eyes hazel green in color.  Aussies enjoy the company of their family and prefer to stick close to their human pack. They don’t do well when they are stuck in the backyard by themselves for long spells. Therefore, an Australian Sheepdog is not suitable for full-time workers.

Border Collie

Border Collies are intelligent and independent herding dogs. They make great family pets when the time has been taken to train them properly. Their natural instincts are inclined towards playing, training, and exercise.

Border Collies usually have brown eyes, but some of them may surprise you with green eyes. This breed originates from the Scottish borders where it was considered quite reliable for herding livestock. Nowadays, they are often cited as the most intelligent of all domestic dogs.

Chihuahua

Although Chihuahua is the smallest dog breed, it has the personality of a big dog. The agility and obedience of this breed are comparable to other competing canines in dog sports. Chihuahuas are quite suitable for long-term companionship because they can live up to 18 years.

They offer a diverse variety of coat types and colors. Similarly, the eye color of these dogs can vary from black to green. Between these two extremes, they can have brown, hazel, or ruby eyes.

Chihuahuas have larger than life personalities and will run your life if you let them. They can be destructive when bored and can become finicky eaters if their diet is fussed over.

Dachshund

People adore the unusually long bodies and the short legs of Dachshunds. This breed is sometimes known as the sausage dog, doxies, and weenie dogs. Like Corgis, Dachshunds pack a big bark.

The sausage dogs were originally bred for hunting. They used to flush out badgers from under the ground for hunters. The presence of a merle gene causes the Dachshunds to have a dapple pattern and blue-green eyes.

Great Dane

The delightful and expressive eyes of Great Danes play a pivotal role in the allure created by their amusing character. Generally, they have brown or amber-colored eyes but, that can change in some cases.

Due to the presence of the merle gene, Harlequin Great Danes are furnished with gorgeous green or blue eyes. These dogs are usually born with blue eyes and the eye color changes as puppies grow older. It might be surprising for you that green is regarded as the rarest eye color for dogs.

The depth of a dog’s vision increases with the increase in nose length. Short-nosed dog breeds possess the ability to form and interpret more detailed images than long-nosed canines. A Great Dane has a 75 degrees binocular vision because of its long nose.

Pomeranian

Pomeranians are one of the popular toy breeds. They resemble a teddy bear due to their fluffy coats and some other features. They are the type of dogs that receive tons of attention. Pomeranians are a perfect companion for people who love to post on Instagram because these canines are bold, lively, and curious.

Although they are small, Poms don’t seem to realize it and can have a “big dog” attitude. This can spell disaster if they decide to chase a bigger dog that they think is encroaching upon their territory. Likewise, they can take on the challenge of jumping from a high place.

Some Pomeranians have hazel eyes with a blue tint. Having said that, this breed can never have pure green eyes. Instead, it is always tinted with blue.

Weimaraner

Also known as the “Silver Hunter”, the Weimaraner is an energetic hunting dog with a strong prey-drive. These dogs have a strong desire to work with their owners. While Weimaraners are fearless hunters, they are extremely friendly and loyal to their owners.

Although they make a fine family friend, these elegant (but demanding) dogs are still found on the hunting grounds. They usually have grey, gold, or blue-green eyes.

Welsh Corgi

Welsh Corgis are 30 pounds of goodness, packed with affection and smartness. This breed is a strong, athletic, and lively little herder who is affectionate and companionable without being needy. Despite their short legs, these dogs are an agile bunch with a rather loud bark.

The medium-sized, oval eyes of a Welsh Corgi can have a lot of different colors. Most of these dogs have different shades of brown for eye color. However, the Corgis with merle genes have bright, green eyes. This is an active and playful breed that tends to bark a lot.
