Deciding which dog breed to get can be a daunting task if you don’t know what you’re looking for. You cannot just get any dog because certain canines are used to specific lifestyles. If you are not home for a long time regularly, you may want to look into breeds that tolerate being left alone. Let’s take a look at some of the most suitable home alone breeds.

Basenji

The bark-less dog has an independent nature, and it can tolerate being left alone. Basenjis were originally bred in Africa as hunting dogs and they still have their excellent spatial awareness.

Although this is NOT the most independent dog breed, Basenjis can still take care of themselves for several hours. Thanks to their curiosity, these pups will always find new ways of amusing themselves while you are at work. On top of that, they greet you with great enthusiasm when you return home.

They are fine on their own as long as they have something to do. Dog toys and puzzles are excellent alternatives to keep them busy while you are at work. These intelligent and calm dogs usually make wonderful family companions.

Boston Terriers can tolerate being left alone but you should provide them with adequate exercise every day. A couple of daily walks are a must for them. Their good behavior has earned them the title “The American Gentlemen” by the AKC.

Despite their large and heavy looks, Bullmastiffs are one of the most docile dogs on the list. They don’t mind staying alone and are also comfortable if a stranger comes up to them. They love to sleep during the day but a few short walks are necessary to meet their energy requirements.

Although they are big, Bullmastiffs do just fine in a small apartment. They were originally bred as guard dogs and still have that calm demeanor. However, these dogs should be taught basic commands at an early age to avoid negative habits.

Chow Chow

Chow Chows act more like cats than dogs. This characteristic makes them unpopular among dog parents. However, these lion-like dogs can stay alone and won’t bring your house down when you are away.

They are aloof (just like cats) and their independent nature makes them wonderful home alone dogs. Chow Chows are not cuddly but that does not mean they are not affectionate. These loyal and lovable dogs love their people and enjoy their company.

French Bulldog

This small and stocky dog was specifically bred for city life. Therefore, it’s NOT surprising at all that French Bulldogs are a very common breed in big cities. According to AKC, this breed does not bark a lot and requires little exercise. These features make it the perfect canine companion for a busy family.

French Bulldogs are just as happy when napping as they are when playing. This means that you won’t have to spare time to walk your dog. Likewise, your pup won’t annoy your neighbors with excessive barking.

Labradoodle

These pups do fine in small apartments because they are small dogs and adapt fast to their surroundings.

Miniature Schnauzers are intelligent little dogs that also double as noisy guard dogs. They are fast learners and adapt quickly to their environment. These canines can be safely left alone for a long time, but you must give them something to stay occupied. For example, dog puzzles and chew toys work like a charm for this home alone dog.
