In humans, extra pigmentation shows up as birthmarks or freckles. The chemical, called Melanin, responsible for these colorations has a similar reaction in other beings.

In the case of dogs, extra Melanin results in marks on the skin as well as on the tongue. The presence of spots on the dog’s tongue is equivalent to freckles in humans. Keep reading to know about the dog breeds that can have spots on their tongues.

Chinese Shar-Pei

This ancient Chinese dog has always been a steadfast companion of humans. Chinese Shar-Peis are a mixture of odd traits and characteristics. They have a broad muzzle with small, sunken eyes. Combine this with small, triangular ears, and a lot of loose skin, and you will get an eccentric look.

They also have blue or black-spotted tongues. The presence of spots on its tongue is a typical physical feature for this breed. According to AKC, a purebred Chinese Shar-Pei must have this pigmentation on the tongue.

Despite their guard-dog nature, Chinese Shar-Peis are quite calm. However, they tend to face every threat head-on and would never pull away from the challenge. Due to their dominant nature, these pups must be socialized early on to avoid behavioral problems. 

Chow Chow

Chow Chows are muscular dogs that were also developed in ancient China. They are known for their lion-like mane, deep-set eyes, and a snobbish expression. Another distinctive trait of these dogs is their spotted blue/black tongue. Likewise, the coat of this breed comes in various colors, like black, blue, red, cream, and cinnamon. 

Chow Chows are considered to be the cleanest dogs ever to exist. In fact, they are often compared with cats in terms of cleanliness and have little to no odor.

They have an air of timelessness surrounding them and can easily adapt to new living places. These canines are perfect for city life as they have no specific exercise needs. Last but not least, they are extremely loyal and can get along well, even with strangers.

Eurasier

This medium-sized dog breed has a moderately long coat. Eurasiers sport a thick double coat that comes in different colors and will require regular maintenance. These spotted tongue dogs can have purple, pink, or spotted blue tongues. They have an angular, wedge-shaped head with pointy ears.

Eurasiers are very loyal to their owners. Although they are generally calm and composed, these pooches can tend to be a bit reserved when interacting with strangers.

Fila Brasileiro

The Fila Brasileiro is a large game hunting dog that was initially bred in Brazil. The saying, “As faithful as a Fila” is about these canines. They live up to their name and are extremely loyal to their peoples. The large bodies of Filas give them an intimidating look and their attitude also matches with it. In fact, they are banned in several countries because of their aggressive nature. Therefore, this breed is NOT recommended for inexperienced owners.

Fila Brasileiros come in various colors, like brindle, mouse-grey, black, tan, and a combination of patched colors. Likewise, they have a black, spotted tongue. They prefer large, open areas and are not suitable for apartment life. A serious amount of training and dedication is needed to domesticate a Fila Brasileiro.

Gordon Setter

The Gordon Setter is the largest of all Setter breeds. These 80-pound dogs sport a shiny black coat with tan markings. In addition to their hair, their eyes, ears, legs, belly, and chest. They also come in a red coat, but red Gordons are extremely rare. This breed was quite popular as a gundog, a few decades ago.

Some of these dogs are born with a spotted, black tongue. Even normal-colored parents can give birth to red or spotted Gordon Setters. This breed is a perfect family companion as it adapts quickly to city living conditions. These pups are easy to train and remain calm if provided enough exercise every day.

Thai Ridgeback

Thai Ridgebacks are tough, muscular dogs that are native to Thailand and are rarely seen outside that region. They get their name from a ridge that is formed on the back as some of the hair grows in the opposite direction. These canines come in blue, red, black, or fawn colors. Some of them may also have a black mask pattern on their face.

Thai Ridgebacks have spotted tongues, but some variations can also have a solid blue or black tongue. Although they are companion dogs, most of these pups are generally self-sufficient. A well-socialized Thai Ridgeback is extremely loyal and loving. They are naturally protective and make perfect guard dogs.

Phu Quoc Ridgeback

This is a rather unusual dog breed that is found in Vietnam. This breed is known for a ridge on its back, spotted tongues, and webbed feet. Naturally, they are hunting dogs and are known for their sporting abilities. They are also called ‘Canine Athletes’ because they are proficient in swimming, sprinting, and even climbing trees!

Phu Quoc Ridgebacks have strikingly black spots on their tongues. The spots on the tongue are caused by melanin, which is also responsible for pigmentations on other body parts. The eyes of this breed are brown and the darker the shade of brown is, the better it is considered.

Phu Quoc Ridgeback is one of the most expensive dogs in the world. A puppy of this breed can cost up to $13,000!
