DIY Essential Oil Anti Itch Spray for Dogs
You can pump up the power of this spray by adding one or two essential oils.
But if you want to use essential oils, check with your dog’s veterinarian to be sure they’re safe for your dog’s level of health.
Your vet is the best person to help you figure out if your dog might be allergic to anything.
What Essential Oils Work for Dog’s Itchy Skin?
Assuming that your dog can tolerate essential oils, some good choices of essential oils for itchy dogs are lavender, witch hazel, rosemary, and lemon.
- Lavender – known for being anti-fungal, antiseptic, antibacterial, and antimicrobial
- Witch Hazel – not really an essential oil, but very soothing for most dogs on their skin.
- Rosemary – not only soothing, but helps repel blood sucking insects like fleas and ticks.
- Lemon – has anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties
All you need to do to use these essential oils for your dog’s itchy skin is add a teaspoon or so of the oil to the recipe above.
Most dogs enjoy essential oils added to this spray. But test in a small area of your dog’s skin first BEFORE you apply everywhere to make sure they don’t have an allergic reaction.
Note: You should NEVER use essential oils DIRECTLY on your dog. This can cause real problems. Always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil or liquid.
Each of these essential oils has a great rep for soothing dry and itchy dog skin.
And they smell great, too! That’s especially beneficial if you have a dog with a naturally stinky, oily coat.
Does this recipe work as an essential oil anti itch spray for dogs?
For most dogs, this recipe (with or without essential oils) works to instantly soothe dry skin on dogs.
If your dog has severe dry skin and the suggestions on this page aren’t enough you may want to check with your vet for a prescription cream to treat the dryness.
If you have an itchy dog, you should know that it’s a super common problem and that you’re not alone. Which is exactly why I use this effective and soothing homemade anti itch spray for dogs.

Sometimes if a dog isn’t getting enough fat in their diet it can also cause their skin to get itchy and flare up.
What Are Hotspots on a Dog?
Hotspots are also known as Moist Dermatitis or Summer Sores. And they can occur anywhere on a dogs body. Although, most dogs that I’ve known and own seem to have recurring areas where hotspots occur on a regular basis.
Once their itch has progressed to a hotspot, you may need to treat it with a hydro-cortisone spreay or cream to promote healing.
If you can get to the itch before it becomes a hotspot then this recipe for our dog anti-itch spray can really do the trick.

With just three ingredients, you can give your dog relief. The best part is that none of these ingredients are likely to cause any allergic reactions for your dog!
Other Dog Itching Remedies
Sometimes dogs also itch because they have fleas or ticks. If that’s the case it’s a good idea to treat the fleas first before you use this spray.

It uses diatomachous earth to kill fleas naturally.
Hydrocortisone Cream for Dogs
If your dog has a severe hotspot or itchiness you can use human grade hydrocortisone cream to calm it down. Just make sure your dog doesn’t lick it. It shouldn’t be ingested.
Witch Hazel for Dogs
I mentioned witch hazel above to add to the anti-itch spray recipe, but you can also use it directly on your dogs skin, just apply the same kind you use on humans with a cotton ball to the itchy area.
The Bottom Line on this 3 Ingredient Anti Itch Spray for Dogs
I really like this recipe because it contains all natural, non toxic ingredients and is very inexpensive to make.
Most people also have all the ingredients in their house already. If not, it’s just a quick trip to the grocery store.
