No matter how well we try to protect them, most dogs will end up with fleas at some point. That’s why you need homemade flea shampoo for dogs and ticks! (Find puppy safe DIY flea shampoos here)
Then our poor pups are just tormented!!
Itchy and scratchy skin!
Bites that can become infected.
And some dogs are even allergic to fleas and can become seriously ill!
How to Keep Your Dog Flea Free
There are plenty of options for keeping your dog flea free – including many over the counter treatments like flea baths, flea collars, and that goo you squeeze out of tube and onto your dog’s neck.
But instead of expensive vet or groomer treatments or harsh chemicals, you can make a natural flea shampoo at home.
This shampoo will kill fleas quickly and is safe for almost all dogs. Some dogs have super sensitive skin though and don’t tolerate this shampoo. You can test by washing a small patch of skin first to see if they’re is any reaction.
It’ll almost always be nicer to their skin than most commercial treatments.
You can also make this shampoo over and over — saving yourself time and money. And save your Pup from itchy flea bites.
As an added bonus this diy flea shampoo smells great too!
All-Natural DIY Flea Shampoo
- 1/2 cup water (preferably distilled)
- 1/3 cup pure Castile soap (you can get Castile soap at Amazon here)
- 1 tsp olive oil
- 20 drops of pure essential oil. I used 10 rosemary and 10 peppermint
- Combine all ingredients using a small funnel, shake well before each use.
- It should keep for about 6 months.
Isn’t this easy????
And every ingredient is safe for most dogs.
Rosemary can be strong smelling.
And occasionally a dog may be sensitive to it like any other food.
But you can substitute in soothing lavender and problem solved!
All you need to do is wash your dog in this shampoo on a regular basis. You usually want to wash most dogs every few weeks to every few months depending on how their skin reacts.
This home remedy DIY flea shampoo is gentle enough to use at every wash and it smells GREAT!
The Next Steps in Flea Mitigation
Once you use this shampoo on your dogs you’re probably going to want to prevent future infestations.
One of the keys to making sure your dog stays fleas free is to get rid of any fleas that are in your home so that they don’t get reinfected.
Ridding Your Home of Fleas Naturally
There are many natural products that will help you rid your home of fleas. My favorite is this product called “Wondercide” (you can get it from Amazon here).
This organic concentrate kills fleas throughout their whole lifecycle so it works quickly and is a whole lot better than loading your house up with harsh chemicals.
Killing Fleas in Dog Bedding
You can safely use the Wondercide product above on all your dog’s bedding, but there is a way that doesn’t involve sprays of any kind.
If the bedding will fit in your washer and dryer you can kill the fleas simply and easily just by washing and drying on high heat.
It works great!
These natural remedies are a great way to get rid of the fleas on your dog and in your house. I hope they help!
