Why Does My Frenchie Fart So Much?

Not many people expect to hear their dog fart. But if you own a Frenchie, you may be hearing these little sounds more than you would like. After about the 5th or 6th time, the cuteness factor has worn out its welcome.

One of the reasons this dog breed farts so much is because of its difficulty in breathing. Frenchies, like other flat-faced dogs, take in more air when they eat. This extra air creates the fart reaction.

Unless you want to spend thousands on an operation to correct their breathing, you may have to endure those farting sessions for many years to come.

Another reason why Frenchies fart so much is that they have very sensitive stomachs. What they eat combined with the extra air they take in, produces enough gas to clear several rooms.

There are 4 things you can do to help cut those sessions down to size and make your home enjoyable once again.

  1. Provide Your Dog With High-Quality Food- Grain-based food is not healthy for your pet. Try to move them to a more protein-rich dog food. Dogs have a hard time digesting grains and the lower quality food does help develop that gas problem.
  2. Slow Their Eating Down- If your Frenchie grew up with siblings, they may eat too fast. They do not want their brothers or sisters to eat their food so they gobble it down. This habit makes them take in more air as well so the combination is not good for your pet. Slow your dog’s eating down and get them to take their time.
  3. Watch What You Feed Your Dog- Some of the food you eat is not good for their sensitive stomachs. Even though those food items you are giving your pet are safe for dogs, they may not be safe for your individual dog. Watch what human food you feed them
  4. 4. Consult A Vet- These professionals will have more ways to cut your dog’s farting down so you can watch t.v. without being disturbed by some foul odor coming from the floor.

There are a lot of reasons why your Frenchie may fart more than you would like or can endure. Here is a list of possible reasons your dog is farting more than he or she should.

  1. Excessive Carbs In Their Food- Some dog food makers put too many carb-related ingredients inside their dog food. Or you are feeding too many human-related carbs to your dog.
  2. Recent Diet Change- You may have suddenly changed your pet’s dog food and their sensitive stomachs can’t handle the change. You need to mix the new food with the old for a few days till your Frenchie’s stomach gets used to it
  3. Food Allergy- Again, this is a sensitive stomach issue and when your dog has food allergies, their stomachs can create some gas. You may have to go to a hypoallergenic dog food.
  4. Too Much Human Food- Your dog may like the smell and the taste of your leftovers but their stomachs may not agree with their noses and eyes. Cut down on feeding your dog human food.
  5. A Lack Of Exercise- Even though they are a low-maintenance pet and do not like a lot of exercise, you still need to exercise them. When the Frenchie gets overweight, they tend to fart more.
  6. Watch Those Vegetables- Yes, vegetables have great nutrients for dogs, but some just do not agree with your Frenchie. Vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, beans, or soy-based foods ferment in their stomach.

This process then creates a lot of gas which will find its way out into your living room soon.

7. Can’t Drink Or Eat Dairy- Some dogs are lactose intolerant and if they have certain dairy products then they will develop more gas. The bacteria acids in your dog’s stomach are the source of this problem.

8. They May Have A Health Problem- Some illnesses do create gas which is expelled from your pet by means of frequent farts. Those diseases are:

  • Cancer
  • Stomach infection
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Inflammation of the pancreas

Check with your vet if you are doing everything else right.

Some final words

A dog farting can seem like fun… for a while. But after a long session of your dog relieving itself of gas, you may fail to see the humor in it. Thankfully, there are things you can do about this problem that does not require a visit to the vet.

Make sure you watch what you feed your Frenchie so that they get the best food possible and not too much of one kind or another.
