Home Remedy Dog Flea Shampoo

Puppy in a metal wash pan

No matter how well we try to protect them, most dogs will end up with fleas at some point. That’s why you need this homemade flea shampoo for dogs.

This recipe is specifically for grown dogs. If you have a puppy, you can find puppy safe DIY flea shampoos here

And some dogs are even allergic to fleas and can become seriously ill!

Why Use Homemade Flea Shampoo?

There are plenty of options for keeping your dog flea free – including many over the counter treatments like flea baths, flea collars, and that goo you squeeze out of tube and onto your dog’s neck.

But instead of expensive vet or groomer treatments or harsh chemicals, you can make a homemade flea shampoo at home.

I’ve included two recipes for flea shampoo here. These shampoo recipes will kill fleas quickly and are safe for almost all dogs.

Tip: Some dogs have super sensitive skin though and don’t tolerate these shampoos. You can test by washing a small patch of skin first to see if they’re is any reaction.

These gentle diy flea shampoos will almost always be nicer to their skin than most commercial treatments.

You can also make this shampoo over and over — saving yourself time and money.  And save your Pup from itchy flea bites.

  2. It should keep for about 6 months.

 Isn’t this easy????

And every ingredient is safe for most dogs.

Rosemary can be strong smelling.

And occasionally a dog may be sensitive to it like any other food.

But you can substitute in soothing lavender and problem solved!

All you need to do is wash your dog in this shampoo on a regular basis. You usually want to wash most dogs every few weeks to every few months depending on how their skin reacts.

This home remedy flea shampoo is gentle enough to use at every wash and it smells GREAT!

Recipe 2. Homemade Flea Shampoo for Dogs

White vinegar being poured into a clear glass bowl

Here is another recipe for a diy dog flea shampoo that works great! You probably already have these ingredients in your house, but it doesn’t have essential oils and is vinegar based, it won’t smell as nice as the first home remedy dog flea shampoo.

Ingredients:

  • Water
  • White Vinegar
  • Dawn dish Soap

Instructions

  1. Mix equal parts of water, white vinegar, and Dawn dish soap in your container.
  2. Make sure your dog’s hair is completely saturated with water.
  3. Lather the home remedy shampoo for fleas on dogs onto your pet. Don’t get it in her mouth or eyes.
  4. Make sure to scrub at the base of the tail and on the belly where fleas often hide.
  5. The fleas will end up dead and floating in the water – that’s how you know it’s time to rinse!
  6. Repeat steps 1 to 5 until no more fleas are coming off of your dog.

The Next Steps in Flea Mitigation

Once you use this shampoo on your dogs you’re probably going to want to prevent future infestations. Because if you have fleas in your home, then your dog will just get fleas again.

One of the keys to making sure your dog stays fleas free is to get rid of any fleas that are in your home so that they don’t get reinfected.

Ridding Your Home of Fleas Naturally

There are many natural products that will help you rid your home of fleas. My favorite is this product called “Wondercide” (you can get it from Amazon here). #ad

This organic concentrate kills fleas throughout their whole lifecycle so it works quickly and is a whole lot better than loading your house up with harsh chemicals.

Killing Fleas in Dog Bedding

You can safely use the Wondercide product above on all your dog’s bedding, but there is a way that doesn’t involve sprays of any kind.

If the bedding will fit in your washer and dryer you can kill the fleas simply and easily just by washing and drying on high heat.

It works great!

These natural remedies are a great way to get rid of the fleas on your dog and in your house. I hope they help!
